Warm Woodlands Themed Baby Blanket

I love making things for the newest member of any family! I get so excited to create something unique and inviting for the new additions. When a friend of mine was expecting a new baby, I took the opportunity to create some new projects, just for her. Therefore, the Warm Woodlands Themed Baby Blanket was created!

How it all Began; A new Stitch combination

I started by trying a new stitch combination for a couple of burb clothes. Every new mom needs to have lots of these handy! I started by searching for burb clothes patterns. Since it has been a while, (over nineteen years to be exact) since I have had a little one in my house, I wanted to be sure to have a good grasp of what size it should be. I found a cute little pattern for a burb clothe here.

Why I started with A burb clothe

Since a burb clothe needs to be made from a dense fabric, I wanted to be sure to use a stitch or stitch pattern that produced just that. The purpose of it is to keep the nasty stuff from getting on your clothes, so of course it needs to be dense. This pattern uses single crochets and long double crochets to create a dense fabric, which was perfect. Not only does the fabric need to be dense, but it also needs to be absorbent and washable. So cotton yarn was the best choice of yarn for this project.

I started with making the burb clothe according to the pattern in the link above. However, I felt it was slightly small so I made another one and added to the width by adding more foundation chains. The larger size felt much better to me. So I changed up the stripe pattern to give it a bit of a different look. I loved how the second turned out.

Now that I had tried out the new stitch pattern, I was comfortable to try it in a larger project. I grabbed some chunkier yarn this time and a larger hook. After some thought, I decided to create my own stripe pattern for the blanket. I wanted to use a bit of solid yarn as well, so I decided to put a couple of solid green stripes on each end of the blanket. I then used the same solid green yarn to make a simple border around the blanket to give it a more finished look.

Even though the Warm Woodlands themed Baby Blanket pattern would work great in a worsted weight yarn, I chose to use a bulky weight yarn. The bulky weight yarn gave it a thick and warm texture. I loved how the entire blanket worked up!
