Free Pattern: Moss and Puff Stitch Bed Scarf

I am always looking for new projects to create. While my sister told me about how she redid her bedroom with new colors and bedding, I had a brainstorm. She explained that her new bedding was light colored but her husband always laid on the bed with his shoes. Hence, she was afraid it was going to soil the new bedding. That is when the light bulb came on. I would make her a bed scarf. She loved the idea and wanted it to be a dense fabric. So, the Moss and Puff Stitch Bed Scarf free pattern was born.

Bed scarves are intended to help keep the bedspread clean when people lay on the bed with their shoes. This free pattern: Moss and Puff stitch Bed Scarf is just perfect for any bedding set and you do not need to worry about dirty shoes on the bed.

Does Your Significant other Lay on the bEd with shoes?

To tell you the truth, my husband does the same thing. He lays on the bed with dirty shoes on, or simply dirty clothes. That is why I have always stayed away from light colored bedding. He also likes the blanket up around his chin at night (Gross! Leaving all that dirty oils from his hair and face on the blanket). However, just recently, I bought a lighter/whiter cover for my bed. So I may have to make one for my bed now, HAHAHAHA!

Choosing the best yarn for The Moss and Puff Stitch Bed Scarf

Okay, back to the one I made for my sister. She had been wanting to redo her bedroom for some time and she finally took the plunge. So she bought a beautiful ivory, beige, and blue comfortable set for her king size bed.

My sister wanted the bed scarf made with a dense fabric, which I totally understood why. But she also wanted it to have texture. And of course, she wanted it to be the blue to hide as much dirt as possible. She sent me pictures of the bedding, but all the pictures had a different look to them due to the lighting. So, I had her take a pillow case into Hobby Lobby and find different yarns in the shades of blue that looked good with the bedding. She then sent me the brand and color names to me. I was then able to go to my Hobby Lobby to look at the choices and decide which yarn would be the best for the project. It of course, had to be washable!

When looking for yarn for a bed scarf, it is important to be sure to look at yarns that are easily laundred. Acrylic yarn is easily washed and will hold it’s shape. Cotton yarn could also be a great option, but keep in mind that cotton does not hold it’s shape as well as acrylic yarns.

The Stitches for The Moss and Puff Stitch Bed Scarf

In order to make this bed scarf a dense fabric, I chose to use the moss stitch and a small puff. This made it dense, but also added some texture to the fabric. I chose the small puff to keep it from being too puffy. Once I tried this combination of stitches, I found it worked beautifully! I worked 11 rows of the moss stitch, 1 row of puff stitches, 3 rows of moss, and 1 row of puff stitches into a striped pattern on each of the ends. This added dimension to the piece, but kept the middle section more uniform. But for the middle of the piece, I worked alternating puff and moss stitch rows throughout. This allowed all the puff stitches to puff out to the same side of the fabric.
