The Puff Stitch

SKILL LEVEL Easy or Advanced Beginner

MULTIPLES Any odd number of chains

PROJECT IDEAS Blanket, headband, shawl, hat, scarf

The crochet puff stitch looks just like it sounds…puffy. It is created with a designated number of loops on the hook. Fewer loops on the hook, the smaller the puff. Hence, the more loops on the hook, the puffier, or larger, the puff stitch. What makes this stitch different from other stitches is that it is made up of several loops. These loops are then connected at the top of the stitch as well as at the bottom. Connecting these said loops is what gives it a raised and defined look.

Using the this stitch gives a unique texture to your project. The puffs can be close together to create a dense fabric or they can be spread apart with chains, making a more open fabric. Since the stitch works well with lots of other stitches, you find it in combination of other stitches to create unique patterns for many different projects. For example, it is often used in hats, scarves, and blankets. But there is nothing that says you can’t use it in garments, potholders, or bags. Let your creativity blossom with this stitch.
