Modern Striped HDC V-stitch Baby blanket

Want to make an adorable and cozy baby afghan in a snap? Well, I have one here that is a breeze to make. So simple, but yet so beautiful. The Half Double Crochet V-Stitch makes this blanket easy enough for even a true beginner to crochet. This Modern Striped HDC V-Stitch baby blanket is sure to be a hit!

THE STITCH- HDC V-STITCH

If you have been crocheting for any length of time, you’ve probably heard of the V-stitch, but generally it is made using the double crochet. Well, this pattern is a v-stitch but it has been modified to use half double crochets instead of double crochets. We all know how easy the DC V-stitch is, and the HDC v-stitch is just as easy.

Since this was another one of my stash buster projects, I wanted it to be simple. I personally love the dc v-stitch because it is simple and quick. However, I feel it tends to be overused at times. I love the height of the hdc, and I know it is not a huge yarn eater. With that being said, I decided that I would try making a blanket from the hdc v-stitch. The results were magnificent!

WHICH HOOK SIZE IS BEST

I normally would have used a larger hook and given it more drape, but when working with different sized hooks, I felt a little smaller hook gave it more of the look I was going for. The smaller hook still gave me drape, but also gave me a little denser fabric, making it more of a spring/fall weighted blanket. Although, I really think a size or two larger hook would still create a beautiful and unique look. It really just depends on what kind of look you are going for.

THE FINAL COMBINATION OF HOOK, STITCHES, & STRIPES

As a result, the smaller hook, the choice of stitches, and the stripe pattern made for the perfect size of blanket for the amount of yarn that I had on hand. I plan on using this pattern again for another stash busting project! So be sure to see what I do next time!

WHERE TO FIND THE PATTERN AND YARN

I originally purchase the yarn from a Micheal’s Crafts Store. However, you can also purchase the yarn here. Although, lots of different brands and colors would work great for this pattern. Let your imagination lead you in choosing the right color and yarn choices.

Modern Striped HDC V-STITCH BABY BLANKET

MATERIALS:

• Yarn: Heartland by Lion Brand: 1 skein in (Color B) Carlsbad Caverns (5 oz/251 yds each)
• Heartland by Lion Brand 4 skeins in (Color A) White Sands (5 oz/251 yds each)
• Crochet hook size G/6 or 4.25 mm
• Tapestry needle
• scissors

• Gauge: 15 stitches = 4″ and 13 rows = 4″
• Finished size: approximately 32″ x 36″

STITCHES

• Chain-ch
• Half Double Crochet-hdc
• Single Crochet-sc
• Slip Stitch-sl st

SPECIAL STITCHES

Half Double Crochet V-stitch- HDC V-st: (HDC, ch 1, HDC) in the same ch or space

PATTERN NOTES:

• Another variation of the HDC v-st is to make (2 HDC) in the same stitch or space. Either way skip 1 stitch after each v-st made.
• Using a ch 1 space between the 2 hdc stitches does make it easier to see the space in which to put the v-st in the next row.
• If using a smaller hook like I did, be sure to crochet looser so your stitches do not become to tight. Or use a larger hook to create similar gauge.
• I used the stripe pattern of 5 rows of white sands (color A), then 1 row of Carlsbad Caverns (color B) and repeated this strip pattern throughout, ending with 5 rows of white sands (color A)
• For the border, I used the Carlsbad Caverns (color B). It consists of three rounds, 1 round of single crochets and 2 rounds of half double crochets. I kept it simple to coincide with the simplicity of the blanket.

MOdern Striped HDC V-STITCH BABY BLANKET PATTERN

Foundation chain: chain 110 + 3 for the turning chain. A total of 113

ROW 1: In the 3rd chain from the hook (the 3 skipped chains count as a HDC)* YO, insert hook and pull up a loop. YO, and pull through all three loops on your hook ( 1 HDC made) YO, insert hook into the same chain, and pull up a loop. YO and pull through all three loops on hook. Sk 1 ch.* Rep from * to * across to last two chains. Skip 1 ch, hdc in the last ch. Ch 2 and turn.

ROW 2: Work (2 hdc) in the space between the two hdc of the first hdc v-st of the previous row and in each space across. HDC in the top of the turning chain. Ch 2 and turn.

Repeat row 2 for pattern following the color stripe pattern of *5 rows of white sands, then 1 row of Carlsbad Caverns*. Repeat between the stars and then finish with 5 rows of white sands. Finish off and weave in ends.

BORDER

RND 1: With Carlsbad Caverns color, slip stitch into any of the corners. ( I usually start at the corner where I finished the blanket body). Begin by working 3 sc in the first corner, then continue working 1 sc in the end of row to the next corner. In the next corner, work 3 sc, followed by 1 sc in each ch space across the end of the afghan. Once again, work 3 sc in the next corner and 1 sc in the end of each row to the next corner. Finally work 3 sc in the last corner, then 1 sc in each hdc across the row to the beginning corner. Sl st to the beginning ch-2. DO NOT TURN.

RND 2: CH 2, hdc in first sc of the first corner. (hdc, ch 1, hdc) in middle sc of the corner. Then hdc in each sc across to next corner. (HDC, Ch 1, HDC) in the middle sc of next corner then HDC in each sc across to next corner. (HDC, ch 1, HDC) in the middle sc of the next corner, and HDC in each sc across to next corner. Finally, (HDC, ch 1, HDC) in the middle sc of the next corner, HDC in each sc across to beginning corner. Sl st to the top of the beginning ch-2. DO NOT TURN.

RND 3: HDC in the first st of the corner. (HDC, ch 1, HDC) in each corner ch-1 space, and HDC in each st across each side of the blanket. Continue around to ch-2 at the beginning corner. Sl st to beginning ch-2. Finish off. Weave in ends.
