Rows of Texture Afghan

This afghan is all about texture! The raised stitches and alternating rows bring it to life with a unique feel of warmth and design. The bold pattern speaks of warmth, strength, and texture. The masculine look makes it a great pattern to use for that man in your life. You will love this Rows of Texture Afghan.

I found the pattern in a pattern the book Afghans for All Seasons Book 1 from the Crochet Treasury Series by Leisure Arts Inc. and Oxmoor House Inc. It is an older book, copyright in 1993, but the pattern is absolutely gorgeous! Fourth of July Fanfare, the original name of the pattern, was done in red, white, and blue, of course. Unfortunately, I do not know who is the original designer of the pattern.

A Graduation Gift

I made this afghan for my son’s high school graduation, so he chose the colors. I loved the way it turned out! This afghan will for sure be a favorite for years to come. The pattern is an advanced beginner pattern, therefore anyone who has mastered the 6 essential stitches of crochet can do this pattern. The rows of texture are created by the stitches used throughout the pattern.

The Yarn and Colors

The yarn was I Love This Yarn by Hobby Lobby. My son chose the colors ivory, green and navy. (The combination reminded me of a blue and green dress I loved as a kid, LOL). Anyways, he has always been a lover of colors, so I was not at all surprised by his choice of colors.

The original pattern called for about 43 oz of yarn and had a finished size of 43″ x 55″. However, he wanted it to be big enough to cover his entire body. Therefore, I added to the length of the pattern to accommodate for all 6′ 2″ of my son’s height (lol).

The Stitches make the Rows of Texture

Just look at all those rows of texture throughout the blanket! Above all, the pattern was actually pretty simple, using half double crochets and treble crochets. The Front Post Treble Crochet stitch (abbreviated FPtr) creates the texture. To create this stitch, you work the treble crochet around the post of the crochet stitches in the previous row.

The border was a simple single crochet around on all edges the first time. The second round was a reverse half double crochet. However, this row can be the most challenging part of the pattern. The reverse hdc just took a bit of getting used to doing, but once I got the hang of it, it went pretty quickly.

I can’t wait to try this pattern again with new colors! The rows and rows of texture are appealing to the eye and pleasing to touch. Finished Size: 43′ x 55′

MATERIALS

• I Love This Yarn by Hobby Lobby, worsted weight yarn, approximately:
• Color A: Blue – 14 1/2 oz
• B color: green- 15 oz
• Color C: ivory- 13 1/2 oz
• Crochet hook size J

gauge: 12 st and 10 rows =4″

SPECIAL STITCHES

FPtr: The stitch that makes the rows of texture.

YO twice, insert hook from front to back around post of stich indicated, YO and pull up a loop. (YO and draw through 2 loops on hook) 3 times.

REVERSE HDC

Working from left to right, YO, insert hook in stitch indicate. YO and draw through, under and to the left of the loops on hook (3 loops loops on hook) YO and draw through all 3 loops on hook

STRIPE SEQUENCE

3 rows color A, 4 rows, color B, 4 rows color C, *4 rows color A, 4 Rows, color B, 4 rows color C * Repeat from * to * 9 more times, then 3 rows Color A.

BODY OF AFGHAN

WITH COLOR A CHAIN 127 LOOSELY

Row 1: Hdc in the third ch from hook and in each ch across. 125 hdc.

Row 2 and 3: Ch 2 and turn. Hdc in first hdc and in each hdc across, changing to color B in the last hdc of Row 3.

WITH COLOR B

Row 4: (right side) Ch 2 and turn. Hdc in the first hdc, (work FPtr around the hdc below next hdc) 3 times, skip 3 sts behind the FPtr ( now an throughout). *hdc in next 3 hdc, (work FPtr around hdc beclow next hdc) 3 times. Repeat from * across to last hdc. Hdc in last hdc.

Row 5: Ch 2 and turn. hdc in first st and in each st across.

Row 6: ch 2 and turn. hdc in next 3 hdc, work FPtr around the next 3 FPtr, * hdc in next 3 hdc, work FPtr around next 3 Fptr. Repeat from * across to last hdc. Hdc in the last hdc.

Row 7: Ch 2 and turn. Hdc in the first st and in each st across, changing to next color in last hdc.

WITH COLOR C

Row 8: Ch 2 and turn. hdc in the first 4 hdc, (work FPtr around Hdc below next hdc) 3times. *hdc in next 3 hdc, (work FPtr around hdc below next hdc) 3 times. Repeat form * across to last 4 hdc. Hdc in last 4 hdc.

Row 9: Ch 2 and turn. hdc in the first st and in each st across.

Row 10: Ch 2 and turn. hdc in first 4 hdc, work FPtr around next 2 Fptr. *jdc in nect w hdc, work FPtr around next 3 FPtr. Repeat from * across to las 4 hdc. Hdc in last 4 hdc.

Row 11: Ch 2 and turn. hdc in first st and in each st across, changing to new color in the last hdc.

Rows 12-134: Rpeate rows 4-11, 15 times. Then repeat rows 4-6 once more, changing to color B in the last hdc of the last row.

EDGING

Rnd 1: Ch 1, DO NOT TURN. working in the end of the rows, work 162 sc evenly spaced across. working in the free loops of the beginning ch, 2 sc in the first ch (co0rner), sc in each ch across to last ch. 3 sc in the last ch (corner). Working in the end of rows, work 162 sc evenly spaced across. Working across to last row, 3 sc in the first st (corner). Sc in each st across to last st. 3 sc in th last st. (corner). Join with slip st to first sc. 582 sc.

Rnd 2: Ch 2 DO NOT TURN. Working form left to right, work reverse hdc in the next sc. and in each sc around. Join with a slip st. to beginning ch-2. Finish off and weave in ends.

Wrapping up the Rows of Texture Afghan

I hope that you enjoyed this pattern. Again it is not my own pattern, but felt it was a good one to share.
