Little Boy Blue Block Stitch Afghan

Have you ever had more than a little yarn left over from a project? You know, not enough to make a large project, but more than what a hat or scarf would need. Of course, that happens to me a lot. I hate the thought of buying just enough yarn and actually running short. So I have the tendency to buy extra “Just to be safe”. Therefore this situation has happened to me several times. The Little Boy Blue Block Stitch Afghan was created from a situation just like that!

A STASH BUSTER PROJECT

Therefore, one of the best things about this pattern is that I was able to use up some of my yarn stash. After making a beautiful baby boy afghan for my niece’s baby, I had a small stash of left over yarn. However, it just sat in the basket waiting me to make it into something cute and beautiful. I loved the yarn colors too, but I just could not decide what to do with it.

Finally, one day, I picked up one of the skeins and to start crocheting. Carefully checking over what I had left, I found 3 skeins of Baby Bee Tricycle Time Yarn and a little more than a skein of the bare blue marled colors. Since I did not have a lot of yarn, the project would have to use a stitch that does not eat up the yarn. So I chose to try a block stitch pattern.

The block stitch pattern, which is a pretty simple and basic stitch pattern, would not eat up too much yarn. It uses the basic stitches of the double crochet, single crochet, and chain stitch, therefore, making the block stitch is very beginner friendly. If you have mastered these three stitches, then this stitch pattern will come easy for you. Finally, the rhymical repetition of the stitches helps to make it quick and mindless.

LITTLE BOY BLUE BLOCK BABY AFGHAN BORDER

For the border, I simply used the same block stitch pattern around all the edges of the blanket. I did one row with double crochets and ch 2 spaces so a ribbon could be weaved through the holes left by the repeat of those two stitches. Weaving ribbon through the edge of the blanket gives it a beautiful and unique finish.

BORDER STEPS

(Sc, ch 2, sc) in the next corner. *Ch 2, sk 2 st, sc in the next st.* across the top edge of the blanket. Sl st to the beginning st of the rnd, ch 3. DO NOT TURN.

RND 2: ( 2 dc, 2 ch , 2 dc) in the first corner ch-2 space. 3 dc in the next ch-2 space, and in each ch-2 space around. Sl st to the beginning tch. Ch 3 DO NOT TURN.

A BEAUTIFUL FINISHED TOUCH

Finally, add an accent color of ribbon by weaving a length of ribbon through rnd 3 of the border on each side of the blanket and tying the ends at each corner into a bow. This adds a beautiful finished touch to the blanket.
