opportunity to share love and pray for Healing

Recently, my daughter’s equestrian vaulting team coach’s wife fell and broke her arm up near the ball and joint of the shoulder. For an elderly woman, this was a significant injury, one that will take a while to heal. When I heard the news, I immediately prayed for guidance of the doctors and for healing of her arm. As I sat in my favorite spot crocheting that evening, God tugged on my heart and told me that I needed to make her a prayer shawl. God was speaking to me and I needed to listen.

After digging through my yarn stash, I came across some Hometown By Lion Brand in the color Houston Ivory. This bulky yarn would be perfect to crochet into a quick chunky shawl. After deciding on a stitch pattern that made slanted groups of double crochet, I was ready to get started.

Coming together quickly

Not only was the pattern pretty simple, but it worked up fairly quickly, taking about 12 hours to make. I was needing it quickly, so the pattern was perfect! The combination of the bulky yarn and the slanted double crochet stitches grouped together gave the shawl a unique texture. Therefore, grouping the stitches in such a way created a ripple effect.

I am so pleased with the way this shawl turned out. It is warm, cozy, soft, and super inviting to wrap around your shoulders. The large thick yarn and the large stitches helped to bring it all together.

Materials for the cozy Slanted double crochet shawl

The hook size I used was N or 9 mm hook, which I probably could have gone a size larger and it would have made it a little looser fabric. The slightly tighter fabric the 9 mm hook made was still a good density of fabric, but it did make it feel heavier. However, the larger hook would have given it looser look and feel.

The yarn weight was a 6, or bulky. Therefore, this help to make the pattern a quick one to crochet up. I like the feel and texture of the Hometown yarn, but it definitely needs a larger hook size. The ivory color of the yarn evoked a calming and restful feeling as I was working with it and so that was a great color for this particular prayer shawl.

I used 4-10 oz skeins of the Hometown Bulky yarn. The finished shawl measured approximately 24″ by 60″, making it perfect to wrap around your shoulders. Be sure to scroll down to find the Free Cozy Slanted Double Crochet Shawl Pattern. Or you can find a printable PDF version here.
